The Sensational She-Hulk #9

Published in January 1990, The Sensational She-Hulk #9 is a notable entry in a series famously defined by writer and artist John Byrne. This particular issue follows the series' established tradition of breaking the fourth wall, utilizing a meta-narrative style that distinguishes Jennifer Walters from other Marvel characters of the era. The cover art, featuring She-Hulk jumping rope, serves as a quintessential example of the playful, self-aware aesthetic that Byrne introduced to the character, moving her away from the standard superhero tropes of the time.

The creative direction behind this run was to emphasize humor and irony, positioning She-Hulk as a character who is constantly aware of her status as a comic book protagonist. By the ninth issue, the series had solidified its reputation for eccentric storytelling and satirical takes on the industry. Critics and fans often look back at this period as the definitive interpretation of the character’s voice, balancing traditional action with the surreal, observational comedy that became the hallmark of Byrne's tenure.
