Where it came from
Published in November 1989, The Sensational She-Hulk #7 stands as a defining entry in John Byrne's celebrated run on the title. Coming out of a period where Marvel Comics was increasingly experimenting with meta-fictional narratives, this issue exemplifies Byrne's irreverent approach to the character. By breaking the fourth wall and directly addressing the reader, Byrne positioned She-Hulk as a self-aware protagonist capable of critiquing the conventions of the superhero genre itself.
The issue is best known for its iconic cover featuring She-Hulk skipping rope while tethered to the Marvel logo, a playful subversion of traditional superhero poses. Byrne, acting as both writer and artist, moved away from the more somber tones of Jennifer Walters' earlier appearances, opting instead for a bright, witty aesthetic that mirrored the sitcom-style humor of the era. The comic was well-received by readers who appreciated its candid tone, cementing its status as a high point in 1980s experimental comic storytelling.
