Where it came from
Thor issue number 80 was published in August 2004 as part of the 'Avengers Disassembled' crossover event. During this period, Marvel Comics sought to drastically shake up the status quo of their flagship titles by dismantling the Avengers team. This issue serves as a critical entry in the 'Ragnarok' story arc, written by Michael Avon Oeming and Dan Berman with art by Andrea DiVito, focusing on the destruction of Asgard and the culmination of the cycle of death and rebirth that had defined the Thor series for decades.
The creative direction for this arc aimed to strip away the traditional superhero trappings of the character to return to the mythic, tragic roots of Norse legend. Andrea DiVito’s artwork leaned into a darker, more cinematic style that complemented the apocalyptic tone of the script. The story was well-received by fans of modern mythic storytelling, marking a definitive end to the existing continuity before the series underwent a significant hiatus and relaunch, solidifying its place as a pivotal transition point in Thor's publication history.
