Thor #81

Thor #81, published by Marvel Comics in September 2004, serves as the final chapter of the 'Ragnarok' arc, a seminal storyline written by Michael Avon Oeming and Dan Berman with artwork by Andrea DiVito. This issue concludes a period of significant upheaval for the character, effectively bringing an end to the long-standing status quo of Thor and the realm of Asgard within the Marvel Universe. The narrative focus on the cyclical destruction and rebirth of Norse gods provided a definitive, albeit somber, conclusion to the creative direction established during this era.

The visual design and tone of the issue were intended to reflect the gravity of the twilight of the gods, utilizing DiVito’s cinematic and muscular draftsmanship to ground the mythic scale of the conflict. The story was well-received by critics and readers for its willingness to embrace high-stakes stakes and lasting consequences, marking a notable departure from traditional ongoing superhero tropes by allowing the title character to face a genuine, seemingly permanent end to his established world.
