Where it came from
Vampire Dormitory, serialized in Kodansha's Nakayoshi magazine starting in 2018, is a supernatural romance manga created by Ema Toyama. The series follows Mito, a girl who disguises herself as a boy to live in a male dormitory, only to discover that her housemate, Ruka, is a vampire who views her as his personal blood source. Toyama, known for her prolific work in the shoujo genre, crafted this series to explore themes of identity and forbidden romance, blending classic gothic tropes with contemporary school life.
The third volume of the series continues the development of the complex relationship between Mito and Ruka, further expanding on the dormitory's secrets and the internal struggles of its inhabitants. Toyama's visual style is characterized by expressive character designs and atmospheric paneling that emphasizes the tension between the human and vampire worlds. Upon its release, the volume contributed to the series' sustained popularity in Japan and subsequent international translation, reinforcing Toyama's reputation for creating accessible, emotionally-driven shoujo narratives.
