Where it came from
Vampire Dormitory, known in Japan as Vampire Danshi Ryo, is a manga series written and illustrated by Ema Toyama. The first volume was released in 2018 as part of Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine serialization. The series was conceived during a period of high popularity for supernatural romance tropes in shojo manga, blending themes of gender disguise with the classic gothic vampire aesthetic.
Toyama, a prolific mangaka known for her distinctive character designs, intended to craft a story that subverts traditional vampire romance dynamics through her protagonist, Mito, who disguises herself as a boy to survive. The series has been recognized for its lighthearted take on heavy supernatural themes, eventually receiving an anime adaptation in 2024 which solidified its reach among modern international audiences.
