Venus Wars #7

Venus Wars, or Venus Senki, originated as a manga series created by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, serialized in Gakken's Monthly Comic Nora starting in 1987. The narrative presents a gritty, science-fiction vision of a terraformed Venus embroiled in a long-standing war between two primary colonies. Issue number 7 reflects the series' mid-run period, during which Yasuhiko utilized his background as a veteran animator and character designer to bring a cinematic, storyboard-like quality to the printed page, emphasizing the complex interplay between mechanized combat and political instability.

The aesthetic of the series is rooted in the late 1980s Japanese fascination with near-future military technology, often compared to the style of early cyberpunk. Yasuhiko’s illustrations in this volume capture a sense of kinetic urgency, favoring fluid action sequences and character-driven drama. The series was well-regarded for its departure from standard space opera tropes, opting for a more grounded, desperate depiction of warfare that eventually informed the 1989 feature film adaptation.
