Where it came from
Woody Woodpecker #159 was published in 1968 as part of the long-running Dell and later Gold Key comic book series. By the late 1960s, the series served as a primary print medium for maintaining the relevance of Walter Lantz's animated characters, adapting the manic energy of the theatrical cartoons into a episodic, kid-friendly format that flourished on newsstands for decades.
The interior art for this period often relied on studio house styles aimed at maintaining visual consistency with the cartoons rather than spotlighting specific auteurs. These issues were designed for accessibility and quick consumption, reflecting the lighthearted, slapstick sensibilities that defined Lantz's animation studio throughout the mid-20th century, and they remain valued by vintage collectors as nostalgic artifacts of the golden age of cartoon tie-in comics.
