Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #179

Published in the mid-1950s, this issue belongs to the long-running Woody Woodpecker comic series produced by Dell Comics. During this era, Dell was the preeminent publisher of licensed animation-based comics, serving as a staple of the post-war American newsstand and providing a primary medium for Walter Lantz’s popular cartoon characters to reach a wider audience beyond the theatrical shorts.

The art and stories in these issues were typically handled by a stable of talented studio artists and writers tasked with maintaining the manic, slapstick energy of the source material. These comics were intended for a juvenile audience and were generally received as lighthearted, disposable entertainment, though they are now valued by collectors for their representative status in the mid-century Golden Age of animated television tie-ins.
