Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #177

Woody Woodpecker #177 was published by Dell Comics in 1963 as part of the long-running Four Color and subsequent solo-titled series featuring the anarchic bird created by Walter Lantz. During the 1960s, Dell Comics maintained a massive output of licensed animation tie-ins, utilizing an assembly-line approach where various staff writers and artists produced stories designed to mirror the frantic energy of the theatrical shorts while adhering to the strict moral codes of the Comics Code Authority.

The art style of this period reflects the house aesthetic of Western Publishing, which handled production for Dell. These books were primarily marketed toward children and sold on newsstands and in grocery stores, intended as disposable entertainment rather than archival collectibles. Because the creative credits were often unlisted in these issues to maintain a unified brand identity, the work is attributed to the anonymous pool of artists and gag writers who maintained the character's manic persona for a mid-century audience.
