Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #182

Released in 1962 as part of the long-running Dell Comics series dedicated to the Walter Lantz character, this issue reflects the mid-century shift in comic book publishing. By the early 1960s, Western Publishing had begun transitioning away from Dell to its own Gold Key imprint, making this era a notable junction in the distribution of animated-tie-in media. The series was designed to translate the frantic, high-energy slapstick of the Lantz theatrical cartoons into a static, episodic print format suitable for young readers.

The creative direction for these issues often fell to various staff writers and artists at Western's facilities, who aimed to maintain the manic personality established by Lantz’s studio while fitting the constraints of the standard comic format. Like many titles in the Walter Lantz line, issue 182 relies on the visual tropes of 1950s animation, characterized by bright, utilitarian coloring and clear, expressive line work. It remains a representative example of the licensing boom that saw major animation studios expand their intellectual property into inexpensive newsstand comics.
