Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #173

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #173 was published by Dell Comics in 1963 as part of their long-running Four Color and subsequent solo-title series. During this era, Dell was the leading publisher of licensed animation comics, translating the anarchic energy of theatrical shorts into a print format accessible to a younger post-war audience. These issues were produced under the careful supervision of the Lantz studio, ensuring the character’s design remained consistent with his cinematic appearance.

The interior art for this period frequently leaned on the talents of established industry veterans who balanced slapstick humor with the constraints of the Comics Code Authority. The title was intended to provide lighthearted, episodic entertainment that reinforced the Woody Woodpecker brand beyond the theater. While specific creative credits for issue #173 are often obscured by the anonymous studio production model common at Dell, the work is representative of the classic mid-century animation tie-in aesthetic, marked by bold lines and straightforward gag-driven storytelling.
