Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker #96

Walter Lantz Woody Woodpecker issue number 96 was published in 1961 as part of the long-running Dell Comics series that brought the manic energy of the theatrical cartoons to the printed page. During this era, Dell was the dominant publisher of licensed animation comics, providing affordable, family-friendly entertainment that allowed fans to follow the slapstick adventures of Woody and his supporting cast, such as Chilly Willy and Wally Walrus, in a medium that emphasized colorful, episodic storytelling.

The art and scripts for this series were typically handled by a stable of anonymous studio artists and writers under the oversight of the Western Printing and Lithographing Company, which produced the comics for Dell. The design prioritized clear, kinetic visuals that mirrored the fast-paced animation style of the Walter Lantz studio, aiming to translate the visual gags of the silver screen into the static format of a comic book. While the creative teams were rarely credited at the time, their work helped cement Woody Woodpecker as a permanent fixture in mid-century American pop culture.
