Web of Spider-Man #22

Published in January 1987, Web of Spider-Man #22 represents a significant chapter in the title's early run, written by David Michelinie with cover art and interior illustrations provided by Marc Silvestri. This issue emerged during a period of transition for the Spider-Man franchise, as Marvel sought to differentiate the various ongoing titles by emphasizing distinct narrative tones and artistic collaborations. The cover, featuring a stark and dramatic portrayal of Spider-Man, is often noted by collectors for Silvestri's grittier, high-contrast aesthetic that began to define his work before he rose to even greater prominence later in the decade.

The story within centers on Peter Parker navigating his personal and superhero responsibilities, a recurring thematic anchor for the character during the mid-eighties. Michelinie’s scripting was focused on grounding the character in contemporary urban challenges, aiming to maintain the relatability of Spider-Man despite the increasingly expansive nature of the Marvel Universe at the time. The issue is viewed by aficionados of the series as a representative example of the mid-tier continuity that bridged the gap between major crossovers, appreciated for its consistent characterization and the stylistic evolution of its artistic team.
