Provenance

Where it came from

Web of Spider-Man Annual #7, published in 1991, arrived during a transformative era for Marvel Comics. As part of the annual series intended to showcase expansive, self-contained stories, this issue served as a vehicle for the 'Sub-City' event. The narrative was written by Kurt Busiek and illustrated by Richard Howell, reflecting the industry's shift toward more intricate, interconnected world-building that characterized early nineties Marvel storytelling.

The creative team aimed to explore the hidden infrastructure of New York City, blending classic superhero tropes with a grounded, urban fantasy aesthetic. The issue is historically noted for its structural ambition and its contribution to the expanded lore of the Spider-Man mythos. Upon its release, it was well-received by readers who appreciated the density of the plot and the way it utilized the annual format to provide a comprehensive look at the hero's environment.
