Web of Venom #1

Web of Venom #1, titled Ve'Nam, was released by Marvel Comics in August 2018 as a one-shot special. The issue was conceived as part of an expansion of the Venom mythos during Donny Cates's critically acclaimed tenure as writer. It serves as a narrative bridge that delves into the character's deeper history, specifically exploring an untold conflict involving the symbiotes during the Vietnam War.

The issue features art by Juan Gedeon and was designed to establish the ancient, militaristic roots of the Knull and symbiote lore that would later underpin the King in Black event. Gedeon’s aesthetic choices focused on a gritty, period-appropriate atmosphere that differentiated the book from the typical contemporary superhero aesthetic. Upon release, the issue was well-received by readers for its world-building contributions and its ability to recontextualize the symbiote’s long-standing presence on Earth.
