Where it came from
X-Statix #12 was published in 2003 as part of the satirical, media-obsessed superhero series written by Peter Milligan. Emerging from the X-Force rebranding, the series was designed to deconstruct the celebrity culture of the early 2000s, positioning mutants as reality television stars more concerned with their public image and endorsement deals than traditional heroics.
The issue is particularly noted for the artwork of Mike Allred, whose distinctive, pop-art style perfectly complemented the book's breezy, cynical tone. By centering the narrative on the grim realities of fame and the disposable nature of celebrity in the Marvel Universe, the creative team crafted a cult classic that remains a definitive example of early 2000s meta-commentary in comic books.
