Where it came from
The Funko Pop! Sports line, which includes the Anthony Davis figure numbered 23, was introduced to bridge the gap between pop culture collectibles and professional sports fandom. Released during a period when Funko was rapidly expanding its catalog into diverse licensing categories, these figures were designed to capture the likeness of iconic athletes in the brand's signature stylized aesthetic, featuring large heads and simplified, minimalist features.
Anthony Davis was selected for this series to represent his stature as one of the premier power forwards and centers in the National Basketball Association. The design highlights his distinct aesthetic markers, such as his uniform and team branding, aiming to provide fans with a tangible memento of his career performance. Upon release, the figure was received primarily as a novelty item, appealing to both serious sports memorabilia collectors and general toy enthusiasts who value the consistency of the Pop! design language.
