Where it came from
Batou, the iconic cyborg operative from the Ghost in the Shell franchise, was captured in this Pop! Movies vinyl figure as part of Funko’s promotion for the 2017 live-action film adaptation. The design leans into the tactical, utilitarian aesthetic of the character, highlighting his signature ocular implants and rugged tactical gear, reflecting the film's attempt to bridge Masamune Shirow's original manga visual language with the sensibilities of modern blockbuster science fiction.
Upon its release, the figure served as a collector’s piece for fans of the enduring cyberpunk series. While the 2017 film received a mixed critical reception regarding its narrative choices, the character designs were widely praised for their faithful translation of the source material. This figure represents a moment in pop culture history where the long-standing influence of Ghost in the Shell was recognized through mass-market toy production, aiming to capture the stoic, battle-hardened essence of Batou for enthusiasts of the genre.
