Where it came from
The Dark Phoenix Funko Pop, numbered 422 in the Marvel series, was released to commemorate one of the most iconic narrative arcs in X-Men history: The Dark Phoenix Saga. This storyline, originally penned by Chris Claremont and illustrated by John Byrne in the late 1970s and early 1980s, depicts Jean Grey’s transformation into a cosmic entity of immense power. Funko designed this figure in an action pose to capture the destructive intensity of the character, emphasizing her fiery aesthetic and signature costume.
As part of the broader Pop! Marvel line, this figure was crafted to appeal to both casual fans of the cinematic iterations of the X-Men and dedicated comic book collectors. The design team focused on translating the stylized, oversized-head aesthetic of the brand into the specific visual markers of Dark Phoenix, such as the vibrant red hair and the golden phoenix emblem. Upon release, it was well-received by the collector community as a definitive representation of the character’s most volatile and significant form.
