Where it came from
Gill, a character representing a classic deep-sea diver, was released as part of the early Funko Pop! line, which gained prominence for its stylized, vinyl aesthetic. Numbered as #9 in the original series, this figure reflects the company's early strategy of reimagining iconic retro imagery through their signature oversized-head design, helping to establish the brand's identity as a staple of modern pop culture collecting.
The design of the Gill figure is characterized by its distinct purple color scheme and vintage diving helmet look, drawing inspiration from mid-century creature features and classic cinema monsters. While the specific illustrator at Funko remains part of the company's internal creative history, the figure was received as a quintessential example of the brand's minimalist, charming interpretation of diverse character archetypes during its initial expansion into the toy market.
