Gill [SDCC]

The Gill Pop! vinyl figure, numbered 09 in the original Funko Pop! line, represents one of the earliest designs released by the company during their transition into the stylized aesthetic that would define their brand. Produced as an exclusive for the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, the figure is based on the iconic Universal Studios monster from the 1954 film 'Creature from the Black Lagoon.' This release was part of a limited wave that cemented Funko’s status as a staple of convention culture, signaling a shift toward pop culture character licensing that favored recognizable, simplified silhouettes.

The design of the Gill-man features the characteristic oversized head and small, rounded body that have become hallmarks of the Pop! series. As one of the earliest iterations of the line, it reflects a more minimalist approach to detailing compared to modern releases, focusing on the character's distinct facial ridges and webbed hands. It was received with significant interest by early collectors, marking the start of the 'Universal Monsters' subset and helping establish the secondary market value that would eventually fuel the broader growth of the Funko collecting community.
