Where it came from
The Hatbox Ghost is an iconic animatronic character from the Haunted Mansion attraction at Disneyland, which originally debuted during the park's 1969 opening. The figure features a ghostly specter whose head rhythmically vanishes from his shoulders and reappears inside the hatbox he carries in his hand. Due to technical limitations with the Pepper's ghost illusion at the time of installation, the effect failed to achieve the desired clarity and the character was removed shortly after the attraction opened, eventually becoming a legendary piece of 'ghost story' folklore among Disney enthusiasts.
Decades later, in 2015, Walt Disney Imagineering successfully reintroduced the Hatbox Ghost to the Haunted Mansion using modern digital projection technology. Funko released this Pop! figure as number 165 in their Disney line to commemorate the character's enduring status as a fan-favorite 'lost' legend of park history. The design captures the character's signature hunched posture, his distinctive cloak, and the mysterious hatbox, leaning into the stylized, oversized aesthetic that defines the Funko Pop! brand.
