Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty was originally created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, debuting on a vinyl coin purse. The character was designed with a minimalist aesthetic, characterized by her lack of a mouth and simple line work, intended to be a blank canvas onto which the consumer could project their own emotions. This design philosophy helped the character transcend linguistic and cultural barriers, evolving from a regional novelty into a global icon of 'kawaii' culture over the following decades.

The Funko Pop! Hello Kitty figure, numbered 116, belongs to the broader Sanrio line, which Funko introduced to capitalize on the character's enduring cross-generational appeal. The figure translates the character’s signature look—including her iconic red bow and simple facial features—into the stylized, oversized-head aesthetic characteristic of the Pop! vinyl toy series. It was received by collectors as a quintessential entry in the Sanrio range, valued for its immediate recognizability and its adherence to the clean, classic look of the original 1974 design.
