Where it came from
Hello Kitty was originally created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, debuting on a vinyl coin purse. The design was intended to bridge the gap between simple aesthetic appeal and a character that could serve as a canvas for various emotional expressions. Over the decades, the character evolved from a regional stationery mascot into a global cultural phenomenon, representing the Japanese 'kawaii' or cute aesthetic on a massive commercial scale.
The Funko Pop! iteration of Hello Kitty, numbered 89 in the Sanrio series, reflects the company's signature stylized approach to pop culture figures. Featuring the distinct oversized head, flat black eyes, and simplified body shape common to the Pop! line, this piece fits into the broader Sanrio collection. It was produced to cater to the significant community of collectors who focus on crossover merchandise between classic Japanese character design and the modern vinyl figure market.
