Where it came from
Hello Kitty was originally created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, debuting on a vinyl coin purse. The character was designed to evoke a sense of warmth and universal friendship, deliberately omitting a mouth to ensure that her emotional expression remains subjective to the viewer. This design philosophy helped the character transcend her initial target demographic of pre-adolescent girls, eventually evolving into a global cultural phenomenon representing the Japanese 'kawaii' aesthetic.
The Funko Pop! vinyl figure series, known for its distinct oversized heads and minimalist features, has collaborated extensively with Sanrio to celebrate various milestones. The number 79 figure, released as part of the 50th-anniversary commemorative collection, serves as a modern iteration of this long-standing partnership. By applying the standardized Pop! design language to Hello Kitty's iconic bow and simple silhouette, the figure pays homage to five decades of branding while fitting into the broader collector-focused vinyl market.
