Hello Kitty

Hello Kitty was originally created by Yuko Shimizu for the Japanese company Sanrio in 1974, debuting as a character on a vinyl coin purse. The design was intended to bridge a cultural gap, drawing on the 'kawaii' aesthetic that was gaining significant traction in Japanese youth culture at the time. Over the decades, the character transformed from a simple stationary icon into a global lifestyle brand, eventually being integrated into the Funko Pop! vinyl figure line to commemorate major milestones.

This specific Pop! figure, numbered 78, was released as part of the Sanrio 50th Anniversary celebration. The design adapts the signature Funko aesthetic—a stylized, oversized head and simple body—to Hello Kitty’s classic features, including her iconic bow and lack of a visible mouth. The release was designed to appeal to long-term collectors and fans of the Sanrio franchise, reflecting the enduring commercial and cultural footprint that the character has maintained since her inception.
