Where it came from
Hester Shaw was released in 2018 as part of the Funko Pop! Movies line, numbered 679, to coincide with the cinematic adaptation of Philip Reeve’s novel Mortal Engines. The figure represents the series' protagonist, capturing her distinct appearance from the film, characterized by her jagged facial scar and tactical, industrial aesthetic. The design team aimed to translate the gritty, steampunk-inspired look of the character into the stylized, large-eyed vinyl format synonymous with the brand.
The figure reflects the design language of the 2018 film directed by Christian Rivers, which depicted a post-apocalyptic world of mobile cities. While the film received a mixed critical reception, the figure remains a testament to the specific visual world-building effort put into the production's costume design. Collectors generally view this piece as a companion to the broader Mortal Engines merchandise line, representing a high-budget attempt to expand a cult literary franchise into the mainstream toy market.
