Where it came from
The Funko Pop! figure representing Groot in his 'Iwua' disguise—a reference to the shapeshifting alien from the I Am Groot series of animated shorts—was released as part of the broader Marvel line. This character iteration draws directly from the 2022 Disney+ shorts, which expand on the personality of the toddler-aged flora colossus. Funko designed the figure to capture Groot’s attempt to mimic other lifeforms, specifically the appearance of the alien Iwua, resulting in a distinctively blocky, stylized aesthetic that remains consistent with the brand's signature oversized head and minimal detail.
The figure’s design was developed to reflect the whimsical, episodic nature of the source material. By focusing on the playful, experimental tone of the animated shorts, Funko aimed to appeal to fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s more lighthearted offshoots. Upon its debut, the piece was received as a niche addition to the Marvel Pop! catalog, largely appreciated by completionist collectors focused on the Guardians of the Galaxy and I Am Groot sub-lines rather than the broader theatrical film franchise.
