Where it came from
Released as part of the Funko Pop! Animation line, this figure captures the titular protagonist of the 1980s animated television series Jem and the Holograms. The series, which debuted in 1985, was created by Christy Marx and produced by Hasbro, Marvel Productions, and Sunbow Productions to promote a concurrent line of fashion dolls. The show remains a touchstone of 1980s pop culture, known for its focus on music, secret identities, and elaborate stage performances.
The figure design mirrors Jem’s iconic aesthetic, featuring her signature vibrant pink hair and stage-ready attire. Funko’s stylized approach aims to distill the complex, glam-rock character design into the brand's standardized vinyl format while retaining recognizable elements like her star-shaped earrings and bold makeup. Upon its release, the figure was targeted primarily at nostalgic collectors who grew up with the original Saturday morning broadcast and the cult following the series developed in the decades since.
