Where it came from
King Groot, numbered 297 in the Pop! Games line, was released to coincide with the popularity of the mobile fighting game Marvel Contest of Champions. The figure depicts a corrupted, monstrous iteration of the fan-favorite character Groot, who serves as a primary antagonist within the game’s narrative. Its creation reflects Funko's strategy of expanding its Marvel catalog beyond the cinematic universe to include deep cuts from digital gaming platforms.
The design draws heavily from the character's in-game appearance, characterized by jagged, bark-like armor and a more aggressive posture compared to the traditional Groot figures. The figure was produced during a period when Funko was aggressively building its gaming collection, focusing on stylized, oversized proportions that became the signature aesthetic of the line. Upon release, it was well-received by fans of the mobile game as a unique variant that captured the darker tone of the contest's lore.
