Where it came from
The Monkey King Pop! figure, designated as number one in the Pop! Asia series, draws inspiration from the central protagonist of the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. Released as part of Funko's initiative to expand its reach into international markets, the figure was designed to introduce a stylized, Western-influenced aesthetic to a classic figure of Chinese folklore, balancing recognizable elements like the iconic golden headband and staff with the hallmark simplified, big-headed geometry of the Pop! vinyl line.
This particular item holds a unique status among collectors as it serves as the foundational piece for the Pop! Asia line, a subset of the brand that celebrates Eastern cultural icons. The design team focused on streamlining the character's traditional intricate armor and vibrant makeup into the minimalist, accessible format that defined the company's early branding success. Upon its release, it was well-received by the growing global community of vinyl toy enthusiasts who were eager to see international mythology represented within the established Funko ecosystem.
