Where it came from
The Monkey King (Gold) figure, released as number 1 in the Pop! Asia series, draws its inspiration from Sun Wukong, the legendary protagonist of the 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. This iteration was created by Funko to expand the brand's reach into international markets, specifically targeting collectors in the Asian region who resonated with the cultural significance of this mythical trickster figure.
The design aesthetic adheres to the signature Funko Pop! silhouette, emphasizing a stylized, oversized head and minimalist features that distinguish the series. The gold finish was selected as a celebratory variant to honor the character's status as a cultural icon, marking a deliberate pivot toward special finishes to differentiate early international releases from the standard domestic catalog.
