Where it came from
The Monkey King, or Sun Wukong, was released as part of the Pop! Asia series to celebrate the iconic protagonist of the classic 16th-century Chinese novel Journey to the West. This figure draws on the character's enduring cultural significance as a trickster god and legendary warrior, translating traditional iconography—such as his feathered cap and staff—into the stylized aesthetic of Funko's vinyl line.
The design emphasizes the character's mischievous expression and characteristic armor, balancing recognizable folk-art elements with the clean, simplified geometry that defines the Pop! brand. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by collectors who appreciated the expansion of the Pop! Asia line into classic folklore, serving as a bridge between modern pop-culture collectibles and traditional East Asian literature.
