Where it came from
Mosquitor was released as part of the Funko Pop! Television line in 2021, drawing inspiration from the original 1980s Masters of the Universe action figure series by Mattel. The character was originally introduced in the vintage toy line as part of the Evil Horde faction, distinguished by a unique gimmick featuring a chest plate filled with a red liquid to simulate blood-pumping action. Funko’s interpretation captures the creature's menacing, insectoid aesthetic while adapting the retro design into the stylized, large-headed vinyl form characteristic of the Pop! brand.
The design focus for this piece was to translate the gritty, monstrous look of the 1980s original into a modern collectible format. By highlighting the character's signature translucent chest cavity and mechanical stinger-gun accessory, the designers aimed to evoke nostalgia for fans of the He-Man franchise. Upon its release, it was received primarily by long-time MOTU enthusiasts and toy collectors who appreciate how the Funko series preserves the distinct visual traits of classic Mattel characters within a contemporary design language.
