Where it came from
Released as part of the Pop! Asia series under number 181, this figure represents the character Mother, a creation of the Filipino contemporary artist Reen Barrera. Barrera is widely recognized for his distinct 'Oh scrap' aesthetic, which features figures often adorned with dolls or symbols representing feelings and emotional baggage. This piece serves as a bridge between high-end urban vinyl art and the mass-market accessibility of the Pop! format.
The design of the Mother figure reflects Barrera’s signature visual language, characterized by distressed textures, intricate patterns, and a monochromatic or muted color palette that evokes a sense of nostalgia and raw human emotion. By collaborating with Funko, Barrera aimed to bring his narrative-heavy, sculptural style to a global audience, allowing collectors of designer toys to engage with his work through a familiar, stylized silhouette. The figure was well-received by fans of both the artist and the Pop! Asia line for its departure from traditional licensed character designs.
