Where it came from
The MTV Moon Person trophy, originally known as the Moonman, debuted in 1984 as the physical manifestation of the network's identity. Designed by Manhattan Design, a firm led by Frank Olinsky, Pat Gorman, and Patti Rogoff, the concept drew inspiration from the network's 'I Want My MTV' campaign and the iconic 1969 Apollo 11 moon landing footage. The goal was to symbolize the futuristic, gravity-defying spirit of the music video era, transitioning from a television graphic into the coveted award for the Video Music Awards.
This Funko Pop! version, numbered 18 in the Pop! Icons series, was created to commemorate the cultural longevity of the trophy. Like many figures in the Icons line, it aims to distill a recognizable piece of media history into a simplified, stylized vinyl form. Upon its release, it was received primarily as a nostalgic collectible for television enthusiasts, serving as a tribute to the enduring visual legacy of the music video medium.
