Where it came from
The MTV Moon Person trophy, originally conceived as the 'Moonman,' was designed by Manhattan Design in 1981, drawing inspiration from the network's inaugural broadcast imagery of an Apollo 11 astronaut planting an MTV flag on the lunar surface. This iconic silhouette was intended to symbolize the dawn of a new era in music broadcasting, serving as a futuristic and slightly rebellious totem for the music video generation.
Funko introduced the Pop! Icons line to honor figures and symbols that have defined cultural landscapes outside of traditional film and literature. The gold metallic finish of the Pop! #18 Moon Person was designed to replicate the reflective, trophy-like appearance of the actual VMA award. Upon its release, it was well-received by collectors as a nostalgic nod to the network's impact on 1980s and 90s youth culture.
