Where it came from
The Rainbow Troll, designated as number one in the Pop! Trolls series, represents Funko's homage to the iconic Good Luck Trolls originally created by Danish woodcutter Thomas Dam in 1959. Funko introduced this stylized vinyl figure to align with the enduring cultural nostalgia surrounding the dolls, which saw multiple waves of popularity throughout the late 20th century. By distilling the characteristic tuft of upright hair and the familiar impish expression into the signature Pop! aesthetic, the company aimed to bridge a gap between vintage toy collectors and modern vinyl enthusiasts.
The design process for this figure focused on capturing the essential simplicity of the original Danish figurines while adapting them to Funko's distinct large-head, wide-eye proportioning. This specific piece was released to commemorate the broader legacy of the franchise, leaning into the vibrant, kitschy color palettes that defined the mid-century original. It was received as a playful addition to the company's expanding catalog, serving as a cornerstone piece for collectors interested in pop-culture-inspired toy history.
