Where it came from
Released as part of the initial wave of the Funko Pop! Basketball series, this Rajon Rondo figure depicts the point guard during his tenure with the Boston Celtics. The series was designed to translate high-profile NBA athletes into the stylized, oversized-head aesthetic that defines the Pop! brand, capturing the player in his classic green team uniform. Rondo was selected for this early series due to his prominence as a four-time NBA All-Star and his critical role in the Celtics' late-2000s defensive strategy.
The design follows the standard Pop! convention of simplified, rounded features intended to offer a whimsical take on professional sports stars. As one of the earliest entries in the sports category, it helped establish the template for future NBA figures, emphasizing recognizable jerseys and team colorways. It was received by collectors as a foundational piece for basketball hobbyists, marking the beginning of Funko's efforts to expand its portfolio beyond pop culture icons and into the realm of professional athletics.
