Where it came from
Released as part of the Funko Pop! Rocks series in 2012, this figure commemorates the iconic aesthetic of the 1968 animated film The Beatles: Yellow Submarine. The design team at Funko aimed to translate the surreal, psychedelic art style of Heinz Edelmann—the film's art director—into the standardized, blocky vinyl form factor. This specific version is a 'color reject' or prototype variant, representing an early production stage where the paint applications or color palette did not meet the final manufacturing standards for the standard release.
These prototypes were never intended for retail sale, as they often circulate through the secondary market after being discarded or salvaged during the quality control process at the manufacturing facility. Collectors value these rejects for their unique visual deviations from the final product, as they provide a behind-the-scenes look at the technical challenges involved in color-matching the vibrant, high-contrast palette of the film to a vinyl medium.
