Where it came from
Saru, designated as figure number 1003 in the Funko Pop! Television line, was released to coincide with the ongoing narrative of Star Trek: Discovery. The figure depicts the Kelpien officer in his signature Starfleet sciences division uniform, capturing the character’s distinct physiological features and his stoic, observant posture. This release was part of a broader push by Funko to memorialize the ensemble cast of the series as it established its footing within the modern Star Trek canon.
The design process focused on translating the complex prosthetic makeup of the character—originally portrayed by Doug Jones—into the standardized, simplified aesthetic of the vinyl Pop! medium. By emphasizing the character's elongated head and specialized sensory hoods, the designers aimed to maintain immediate recognizability despite the minimalist style. Upon its debut, the figure was welcomed by fans of the series as a staple addition to the growing collection of Star Trek-themed collectibles.
