Scare Glow

Scare Glow was introduced by Mattel in 1987 as part of the final wave of the original Masters of the Universe toy line. Developed during a period when the brand sought to introduce more overtly macabre characters to maintain interest as the franchise's initial popularity began to wane, the figure was designed to glow in the dark, a gimmick achieved through the use of phosphorescent plastic. The character's skeletal appearance and eerie backstory as the ghost of Skeletor's warriors made him a distinct departure from the more traditional heroic figures, leaving a lasting impression on collectors of 1980s action figures.

The design of Scare Glow is widely attributed to the Mattel design team of the era, who aimed to create a visually striking figure that capitalized on the appeal of supernatural motifs. The figure featured a molded plastic skeleton wearing a purple hooded cape, a contrast that made the glowing effect particularly effective in low-light conditions. Despite its late release in the original toy line's production cycle, Scare Glow has since become one of the most sought-after pieces in the Masters of the Universe canon, consistently regarded by fans and industry historians as a quintessential example of the creative risks taken during the line's closing years.
