Where it came from
Scare Glow was introduced to the Masters of the Universe line by Mattel in 1987 as part of the final wave of original toys. Marketed as the 'Evil Ghost of Skeletor,' the character was designed to capitalize on the popularity of glow-in-the-dark aesthetics, featuring a translucent plastic body with a skeleton pattern that was revealed only in low light. This specific aesthetic choice aimed to differentiate the figure from the more standard heroic and villainous archetypes that dominated the earlier series.
The Funko Pop version, numbered 517, serves as a contemporary homage to this classic 1980s design. Funko designers prioritized recreating the iconic spectral skeletal appearance while adhering to the stylized, large-headed aesthetic of the Pop line. Upon its release, the figure was well-received by nostalgia-driven collectors who valued the faithful translation of the original action figure's most distinct feature, the glowing paint application, into a modern display format.
