Where it came from
Semmi, the sidekick to Prince Akeem Joffer in the 1988 film Coming to America, was introduced as part of the Funko Pop! Movies line in 2018. This release coincided with the enduring cultural legacy of the film, celebrating its characters as iconic staples of eighties cinema. The figure captures the character's signature look, including the velvet-trimmed tuxedo worn during his time in Queens.
The design follows Funko's standard aesthetic, which emphasizes the character's exaggerated features and specific costume details to maintain brand consistency while ensuring recognizability. As part of a series honoring classic comedies, the figure was well-received by fans of the film who sought to complete the set of core characters, bridging the gap between nostalgic movie merchandise and contemporary vinyl collecting.
