Where it came from
The LEGO Star Wars BD-1 set, released in 2022, was designed to celebrate the character's prominent role in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This display model captures the iconic companion droid of Cal Kestis, featuring articulated joints, a tilting head, and translucent elements that mimic the stim canisters used in the game. It was developed by the LEGO Group as part of their focus on highly detailed buildable character models intended for display rather than traditional play.
The design process sought to replicate the industrial, lived-in aesthetic of the Star Wars universe through complex SNOT (Studs Not On Top) building techniques. By utilizing specific color-blocking and mechanical layering, the designers aimed to convey the droid's cobbled-together appearance. Upon its debut, the set was well-received by fans of the Star Wars franchise and adult collectors for its accurate representation of the character's functional design and its stable structural integrity.
