Where it came from
Released in 2012 as part of the inaugural wave of the Lego Friends theme, Bunny's Hutch (set 41022) was designed to introduce younger builders to the Heartlake City world. The set follows the theme's signature aesthetic, characterized by a bright, pastel-heavy color palette and a focus on animal care, which marked a significant departure from Lego's traditional system-based city sets by utilizing more specialized, rounded elements to achieve a softer look.
The design process for this series, led by a dedicated team at the Lego Group, aimed to address a perceived gap in the market by offering sets that centered on narrative-driven play and character companionship. Upon its release, the Friends line faced early critique regarding its gender-specific marketing strategies, yet the sets were widely praised for their technical ingenuity and the accessibility of their building instructions, helping to broaden the company's appeal to a more diverse demographic of young builders.
