Where it came from
Released in 2018 as part of the Lego City Trains subtheme, the 60198 Cargo Train was designed to serve as a high-functionality centerpiece for the modern Lego city layout. The set was engineered to incorporate the Power Functions ecosystem, allowing users to control the locomotive's speed and direction via Bluetooth remote or a dedicated mobile application, marking a significant transition in how Lego integrated digital connectivity into its traditional building sets.
The aesthetic design focuses on industrial realism, featuring a multi-segment train comprised of an engine, a crane wagon, a container wagon, and a log wagon. The design team aimed to balance complex mechanical features—such as the operational crane with a rotating arm—with the accessibility required for the 6-12 age demographic. Upon its release, it was well-received by the hobbyist community for its robust build quality and the inclusion of the then-new Powered Up component system.
