Where it came from
The Lego City Passenger Train 60197, released in 2018, represents a modern iteration of the long-standing City Trains subtheme. Designed to provide a contemporary railway experience, it features a sleek, aerodynamic motorized locomotive and passenger cars that reflect modern high-speed rail aesthetics. The set was engineered to integrate with the Bluetooth-enabled Powered Up system, moving away from the infrared remote controls used in earlier generations to offer a more seamless play experience for builders of all ages.
The design team focused on a commuter-style functionality, emphasizing accessibility through removable roofs and interior seating arrangements that allow for minifigure placement. As a core set in the City line, it received positive feedback from the building community for its streamlined aesthetic and the inclusion of a functional rail circuit. It remains a hallmark of the modern Lego railway collection, balancing sophisticated motorized mechanics with the modular, play-centric design language that defines the broader City theme.
