Where it came from
Released in 2012 as part of the LEGO Ninjago 'Rise of the Snakes' wave, the Tread Assault (set 9444-1) was designed to expand the arsenal of the earth ninja, Cole. The set reflects the theme's shift toward more complex, weaponized vehicles that mirrored the escalating conflict against the Serpentine clans. Its design features a distinct heavy-duty tread system intended to evoke an industrial, rugged aesthetic suitable for Cole’s character, while incorporating elements like flick-fire missiles and a detachable scout vehicle to enhance playability.
The development of the Ninjago vehicle line during this period focused on blending traditional ninja motifs with high-tech, aggressive engineering. Designers sought to create builds that felt balanced between fantasy weaponry and functional mechanical movement. Upon its release, the set was well-regarded by builders for its unique tread mechanism and its inclusion of key minifigures from the narrative arc, solidifying its place as a staple of the early Ninjago vehicle lineup.
